It's a CMP Service Grade Special with a brand new Criterion Barrel and new wood. All of the metal looks new and the Throat Erosion is .5 and the Barrel Erosion is 1. Basically, it's a Brand New Garand!
Enjoy the Pics!
So now you know why I have been selling off all of my other stuff!
The fellow who sold it to me bought it from a buddy who picked it up from the CMP. He said the reason he bought it was because the metal looked new and the wood was so dynamic.
I guess that's the same reason I bought it from him!
I figure it is my tribute to Walt Kowalski and his "Get off my lawn" old-school approach to living!
BTW- I also just recently bought a 1969 Colt Commercial Government Model 1911 in pristine condition.
Waiting on my Service Grade to come in from CMP. They arent going to be around forever, so I finally ordered one back in the beginning of January.
I figure you cant get too many excellent quality truly durable and battle proven rifles for $625 with that kind of history....so I "pulled the trigger".
Hope mine looks as nice as yours....though it wont have a newer Criterion barrel.
$625 from CMP. Or $525, or $950 or more depending on how nice you want one....but they wont be around forever at those prices. Once they are gone, M1 prices will likely go way up. Springfield was making new ones for a while and they wanted $1500+ for them....and those have zero history attached to them or their parts.
Seriously, you wont find a better deal anywhere than what the CMP offers.
You need to meet a few basic requirements, but they are easy enough, and there is a bit of a wait for them. 60-90 days right now. They wont charge your CC until it ships, and it ships directly to your door, so no transfer fee.
Last two I saw for sale at my LGS were $400 for one and $600 for the other over the price I paid for mine, and neither were in as good of a condition either. One had the stock modified to add a rubber recoil pad and the other had the finish worn darn near all the way off, and no, it wasnt a Winchester.
Man I remember back when a Garand from the CMP was like $350 for a fild grade and I was too cheap to pay less than $500 for a service grade. If I could only go back and kick myself for not buying a few at those prices.
