Just remember to stay focused and not muddle you message. If it's about guns, then stick to gun rights. Don't inject immigration, health care or any other issue into the mix. A razor sharp focus is a must.

Exactly , for the purpose of this walk ALL other issues are to be left at home during the walk . Gun rights period .

Just a couple of things I want to throw out there...

As far as media spokespersons: between my law enforcement service and my terms as an NRA board member I have a lot of experience with the media. When they arrive they're going to look us over and home in on anyone who LOOKS as if they can be goaded into saying something either provocative or bone-headed. The way we appear is more important than people may realize. I recommend that participants in this thing dress in a fairly conservative manner. PLEASE do not wear camoflage or anything that suggests a "weekend warrior" mentality. Avoid t-shirts along the lines of "KILL 'EM ALL, LET GOD SORT 'EM OUT." Save that stuff for the gun club. The media will be looking for ANYTHING that they can spin to make us look like a bunch of rednecks out to intimidate our neighbors. DON'T give it to them. We MUST police ourselves on this.

Next is the type and manner of carry of firearms. Many people here have never open carried and so have never had to be greatly concerned about the type of holster they use. For example, I carry a brace of Colt single actions in open top skeletonized speed rigs. I will not be carrying them on the walk due to the fact that they have NO weapon retention capability. Most downtown areas are lousy with mentally disturbed individuals.

SECURE CARRY OF OUR FIREARMS IS A TOP PRIORITY!!! MEASURES MUST BE TAKEN TO ASSURE THAT THEY ARE SNATCH-PROOF!!!!

We must make an effort to watch each others backs at all times. If a fellow walker has stopped and is speaking to the media or to interested citizens, WATCH HIS BACK!!! Long gun carriers will have their arms slung and will be vulnerable to approach from the rear. WATCH THEIR BACKS!!!

Here is my suggestion, for what it's worth...

Don't complain to the press (or anyone who will listen)that our rights are being threatened, removed, or otherwise stomped on. They're expecting that. It's old news and people won't hesitate to dismiss you as extremists, brown shirts, rednecks, what-have-you. Instead, you have to make an impression. Make it memorable. Make it MEAN something to those watching. How? By making it clear that you are there simply to provide education about a subject that far too few people understand. Provide useful, factual (not opinionated) information to people. Make it educational!!! Find out how many robberies, breakins, rapes, carjackings, etc. are committed in Indiana and INFORM people that it is within their power to prevent it from happening to them and their families. Provide facts about crime rates in Kennesaw, Georgia (where gun ownership is mandatory) compared to Indianapolis. Campaign For Liberty — Gun Ownership Mandatory In Kennesaw, Georgia Crime Rate Plummets. Teach people what their rights are and why guns for private citizens are a blessing. Have scriptures ready for the religious. Have facts ready for the analyticals. Have stories ready for the emotional.

Ignorance is based on lack of information. So give it to them.

I just feel that if the position of gun ownership were approached from a more personal, meaningful, educational direction, you might raise some eyebrows and gain a few allies. Don't make it all about "me and my rights", make it about "you and your safety". Make it hit home.

And of course, keep calm, cool and collected. When/if the media approaches, THINK before you speak. DO NOT let them rattle you.

Then... you just might make a very unique and lasting impression.

    What Jennybird said.

The point might also be made that the police have no legal obligation to protect individuals and that they usually arrive on scene after crimes have already occurred.

Yep. Police response time is a great one. Police are wonderful tools to help keep the peace (which should be emphasized... you don't want to appear to be police bashers by any means), but if you're being mugged in a parking lot, or someone is breaking into your house, it's over long before the police arrive.

I have two thoughts regarding the media.

First, it's important to note that their monopoly on the dissemination of information is waning. Socialists fear conservative talk radio because it circumvents the bottleneck and filters of the traditional media -- filters that socialists have influence (if not outright control) over. We have YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, email, talk radio, etc. Until they bring back the fairness doctrine and FCC control over the Internet, these are the places where we can combat the media hatchet jobs. I'm not saying to ignore the media. But we don't have to treat them like gods. I think that if I were to allow them to interview me, it'd be with my own video rolling the entire time -- just in case they decide to leave my best comments on the editing room floor.

Secondly... rats, the first point took too long to write. I no longer remember the second. Getting old is very painful.

    Carry on. :D

I PROMISED I wouldn't post today as my daughters 5th birthday is today, but they are watching cartoons and I had some down time. I feel I should say SOMETHING here.

Just a couple of things I want to throw out there...

All of this is EXTREMELY important. I will be border line of dressing appropriatly with my NRA shirt that says "2A: America's Original Homeland Security". But I'll be wearing my Kaki pants and nice shoes. No one should wear camo. It's important we look like the everyday people we are. The moment we start looking like nutjobs and militia (even though everyone of us ARE militia) the people we want to reach will be lost.

Also, Firearm Retention is a must. I have a Kydex holster for my Baby Eagle, and while it has no top strap, it's very hard to snatch out. I had it built extra snug just for that purpose.

Also, the camera people will be our first line of defense against anyone trying to snatch and grab. 99% chance this will never happen but it's good to be prepared. I seriously don't see this happening.

I'm just quoting this cause I couldn't have said it better. Spot on. Rep on the way.

I think Savage Eagle may have them on his drive as well

Hey, I taught we's was freends mang!!!! You know you want a couple copies! :D

The media...? or the police? Wait.... what? :D

Yea, that. Or that. Huh? What were we talking about?

    That is all.
