Detroit man accused of marching naked 15-year-old son into lot, killing him over dispute

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (AP) — A 37-year-old father irate over hearing his 15-year-old son had sexual contact with a 3-year-old girl made the teen strip at gunpoint, marched him to a vacant lot and shot him to death despite pleas from the boy and his mother, a relative said.

Michigan authorities filed a first-degree murder charge Wednesday against Jamar Pinkney Sr. in the shooting death Monday of Jamar Pinkney Jr. in the Detroit enclave of Highland Park.

Defense attorney Corbett O'Meara said prosecutors should consider evidence of the father's state of mind over the sex abuse report.

"If something were to happen that would cause a reasonable person to lose control of himself, that is something the prosecution would have to take into account," O'Meara said outside Highland Park District Court.

Tensions were high in the courtroom Wednesday as the handcuffed suspect was led into the room for the arraignment, which lasted less than a minute.

"No, No, No," one female relative cried before a police officer escorted her out.

Judge Brigette Officer entered a not guilty plea for Pinkney, who's also charged with assault, and ordered him jailed without bond until a preliminary examination Dec. 1.

"This is something that's hard to deal with for all the parties concerned, including the police," police Chief Ted Caldwell said afterward. "Highland Park is a small city. These are people who have been members of the community for years."

Caldwell said the sexual misconduct allegation that led to the confrontation wasn't part of the police investigation.

The shooting happened Monday night in a vacant lot in the once-prosperous city of 16,000, where decay, abandonment, fires and demolition have eaten away at many of the sprawling homes. Highland Park recently exited years of state financial oversight.

Visitors built an impromptu memorial at the shooting site. Two votive candles sat amid 10 stuffed animals, including two white teddy bears with red hearts embroidered with, "I love you."

The boy's mother, Lazette Cherry, told the Detroit Free Press that her son told her he had improper sexual contact with the girl.

"I called and told his father. This isn't something you sweep under the rug," she said.

Cherry said the elder Pinkney arrived at the home with a gun, ordered his son to strip and marched him outside despite her protests.

"He got on his knees and begged, 'No, Daddy, No,' and he pulled the trigger," Cherry said.

Cherry did not immediately respond to a message Wednesday from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Damn, I'm not quite sure how to comment on this one.

I can't say I'm sad that a (potential) future serial rapist is off of the streets...But that is pretty brutal.

I could never harm my own kid, no matter what he/she did...They'd definitely be turned into the authorities, but stripping him down naked and murdering him execution style is pretty extreme.

The boy should have been brought to trial for his crime, not excuted by his own father. The father should also be brought to trial for his crime and if or when convicted should receive the death penality. No matter what my kids do I could never even think of doing that, let alone hearing them say "no daddy, no" that just haunts me.

    I totally agree.
No matter what, how can a man take his own son's life.

The only issue I have with the death penalty is that someone is commissioned to murder someone else, and when it is authorized, then it's "ok" and not considered a crime itself. Somehow, that just doesn't seem right.
What other "crimes" are "ok" or commissioned that would otherwise be against the law?

There is the moral part of it, but If they are deemed unfit for society ship them somewhere else or give them the death penalty. I'd rather not have my taxes go up to support a bunch of criminals on death row. Or maybe they use them as free labor so they do contribute to society somehow. :dunno:

I heard that it costs more to execute someone(after all of the appeals) than it does to put someone up with 3 hots and a cot for the rest of their life.

I could very well be wrong though.

I'd wager that the father at some point throughout the trial may commit suicide. If you are unstable enough to murder your own child, you may also be unstable enough to murder yourself as well.

Stable or unstable, having that on your concious has to be tough to deal with.

I know I'm only one man, and can't even try to being what goes on in other's heads...

I know for a fact I could never bring myself to commit suicide; with that being said, I could kill myself 100 times over before I could kill my own flesh and blood.

I'm with you on this. ^^^^^^

Ya know Highland Park is REALLY effed up. I know a little about the area so the violence makes sense but very tragic.

I worked in that area for years in the early part of the decade. That city (surrounded by Detroit like Hamtramick) was so broke it had no garbage pick-up and NO police force. They were paying the Wayne County shrrifs and then stopped paying os they stopped patrolling. It was like the wild west. When I left he job people in Highland Park had to call the State police who of course had to respond. I felt safer when I got back into Detroit proper with their well armed cops.

Crazy situation. The boy desrved his day in court. I'll bet we find some creepy history with this "dad".

No law enforcement and no trash pick up???

Wow, I know that compared to no law enforcement, trash pick up may be trivial, but I guess that just goes to show you how truly bad off that place really is/was...Wow.

I agree with your last sentence...There has to be some nasty skeletons in that man's closet to brutally murder his own flesh and blood without even the slightest hesitation.

BTW, good to hear you made it out of there safe and are in a better environment now.:yesway:

Well I am in Fort Wayne :D!

But yeah I had a white collar job that took me into the neighborhoods. I was often mistaken for the Po-lice by my "look".
Google Highland Park and police or trash pickup. No trash pickup is only trivial the first week......

Check the links below the story above as well the story above as well...

Apparently they re-established the police department in 2007!

Sorry for the derail. Back on topic. Watch when this dad's background is revealed. I just have a feeling....
