i have a question that probably has a very short and simple answer. What are the regulations and laws reguarding having a long gun in a truck gun rack? this stems from a discussion with a friend and i didnt have a good answer to give. any IC numbers for reference would also be appreciated.

yea that was the main point i made to him that firearms left open in a truck would vanish like a fart in the wind.. we were just wondering the laws governing this

I actually saw a truck driving down the road one day which had a 16" AR (with mag inserted) on a back window gun rack....I could only see its outline because the window was tinted....but it really stood out to me and have remembered it ever since...lol

No statute but maybe complications if we are hunting. Are we hunting?

As well, especially with interia firing pin platforms on long guns that there may be safety concerns with having a chambered round.

A friend at work told me about a long gun rack that fits them on the ceiling, so you still have access to them/storage of them, and keep them out of view.

I've thought about a long gun rack in a vehicle. My goal would be to have one that had locks and good retention. I'm not sure exactly where I'd mount it. I'd need it somewhere easily accessible should I need it in a hurry, but not easily seen from outside.

It's not a priority right now, but it is something I think about.

I remember as a kid seeing a lot of trucks with gun racks in the back window. I asked a LEO acquaintance of mind about a year ago why we didn't see them much anymore and if they were still legal. He said yes but too many people had had their trucks broken into and the weapons stolen so most don't display them that way anymore. He said they were perfectly legal but would get the attention of the police given the way things are today so he didn't advise it from a purely common sense perspective in town. He said he had friends who still carry them that way in more rural areas, though.

You may not want it up there when visiting a school. Federal GFSZ act. aka 1000' rule. Since it's a long gun, your LTCH won't cover you.
