Leather buttstock cover, Black tar goop?

Was gifted an old rifle...had a leather buttstock cover that was glued on with tar.....thick black goopey nonsense and i dont know how to get it all off or what in the heck it is. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You might try mineral spirits, or even "Goof Off" (made for removing dried on paint).

3M makes a spray that you can get at most automotive stores. It is called 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner. It removes adhesive residue, road tar, grease, oil, tree sap, dead bugs, etc. I use it to remove road tar off my vehicles. It's worth a try.

will that stuff eat away at the plastic buttplate?

WD 40 does pretty good at this kind of work and is pretty much w/o negative effects to most surfaces.
