I grew up in the 60s and 70s watching all of the old John Wayne war movies. At that time, most of the men in the neighborhood were WWII vets in their upper 30s and 40s. That combined with the war movies gave me a strong fascination with anything WWII related. We were not a gun owning household, but had no problem with them. I progressed through cap guns and into BB guns. When I was 12, my father bought me a Glenfield Marlin 22lr. That was the only gun I owned until 2008 when I finally bought a 1911. I've made up for the drought in gun buying since then though.
Grandpa sat my 5yr old butt on a stool in the basement with a workbench in front of me and taught me to shoot his H&R Sportsman at a metal trap he had at the end of the room. There weren't any toy guns in my family, just the real thing. I still have that revolver in the safe and it goes with me to the range about every time go. :-)
