im not a dnr but it is legal to hunt with a pistol with a bullet .243 or larger. i believe the only restriction is no semi auto pistols
A DNR officer came to my house about a deer I killed the first day of archery . While he was here I asked him about the .243 . He pulled a card out of his pocket to measure the round and said it was not legal. He measured the width of the bullet and the length of the case and told me it was not legal. He went to his truck and brought in a Reg Book , after he left I looked it up and it says different. " a bullet length of .243 or larger". I think he was trying to put me in a trick bag
Did he reject it on bullet size or case length ?
That sucks, depending on who you ask depends on the answer you will get. He pulled a 45 round out and measured it telling me that the bullet is legal but the case is illegal.sounds to me like the officer didn't know his own regulations. I've had the same thing happen to me. different circumstance but the officer definitely didn't know the regs and I had to clear it up with the wildlife section downtown. It still cost me a ticket though.

Could i use my HK51 ? its a .308 with 8" barrel ?
Can i deer hunt with a .308 pistol in the state of IN ?
What does the regulation booklet say?
UHmmm, Ya it is !!!!
Question should be---Is It illegal?. I don't see where semi-auto handguns are specifically excluded in the regs so it is legal.I don't have any idea if a semi-auto handgun is deer legal or not.
Thank you Sir for your response, i will continue to do a little more research on it but i think your response is pretty accurateQuestion should be---Is It illegal?. I don't see where semi-auto handguns are specifically excluded in the regs so it is legal.
caveat---Some DNR Officers will get real confused on this one.

I printed this off of this web, I believe, Deer Hunting Equipment...........Handguns, other than muzzeloading, must have a barrel at least 4 inches long and must fire a bullet of .243 inch dia. or larger. The handgun cartridge case, w/o the bullet, must be at least 1.16 in., long..... A .30 carbine, case, is 1.27 in., long, and fires a bullet, .308, in dia., so is it legal, looks like it to me .....Im looking for a DNR officier for some clarification. Is it legal to hunt deer with a .243 in a pistol in the state of Indiana?
