Good thing Mourdock didn't get elected...........

    wait...............

Met Mourdock at an Indy 1500 and he seemed very smart and was a nice guy. Just put his foot in his mouth after the primary. He got smoked by a campaign that was well prepared and pushed him back on his heels. Donnelly probably would have beat Lugar this year by making him look extreme. :twocents:

    I agree.

Donnelly had reelection to worry about. Lugar was slam dunk anti-gun vote.

I don't see donelly being barry's complete lap dog.

Anyway, put the pressure on visclosky. He is antigun but he wants to be reelected.

New to the area but looks like Visclosky has been in forever and last month he wiped the floor with his challenger. Can anyone tell me if its worth the effort to contact the guy or is he a diehard liberal socialist?

If Lugar had been running, the Dems would not have made a serious effort to unseat him.

You guys are looking at this the wrong way and writing letters to the wrong people. The Dems have always been for gun controll. The Republicans have the power to stop this. Boehner as Speaker of the House could just put the bill in the desk and not even bring it to floor for a vote as he has done to many of the bills supported by the President and submitted by democratic House members. In the Senate any Republican member can filibuster the bill requiring 60 votes to pass. SO, the dems cannot pass an assult weapons ban or a ban on high capacity magazines without the help of republicans. If you look at the last 4 years it is not the dems who have been towing the party line , it is the republicans who all stand together. BTW, Donally is a pro-life democrat,so he does't just follow the party line. After all the talk I expect the republicans to block any weapons ban, at most they may go along with a ban on high capacity magazines. You need to write the republicans and urge them to block this nonsense, in the meantime I am going out to Big R and buy that 15 round mag for my P89 before it is gone or they raise the price. Looking at the bright side of this if it does happen. It will make our auto rifles go up in price assuming we could still sell them. What worries me most is if they stop us from selling to private individuals without going through a dealer and paying him a fee which wouyld probably go through the roof.

We all need to call, write, email and call again just for good measure. If you're reading this I assume you have at least a minute to call and leave a voicemail for our representation in Washington. Make sure they know what the people who elected them think.

    Joe Donnelly - 202-225-3915
    Dan Coats - 202-2245623
Pete Visclosky - 202-225-2461 - For those in District One.

Here's the one I sent as a follow up to my first letter asking him about 2nd Amendment rights. The first was sent about 3 weeks ago; this one Monday night:

    Congressman Donnelly,

It is with dismay that only a few days after receiving your reply to my letter congratulating you upon your election to the Senate, I read that you are abandoning your support of the Second Amendment right of Hoosiers and all Americans to keep and bear arms. I understand that you may feel pressured to join with those that would call for a curtailing of Constitutional rights in response to the tragedy in Connecticut, but you must know that such legislation is both ineffective and an affront to liberty. Propose legislation to solve the problem, not to give people a fleeting, ephemeral feeling of "security". Hoosiers don't want this obfuscatory legislation. We have sent you to Washington to represent our interests, apply Hoosier common sense to solve the multiple, weighty problems that face this nation, and to be a steward of the rights and liberties earned through the acts of sacrifice of those many who died to secure them.

The words of Benjamin Franklin still ring true today: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Consider the following events, not widely reported:

•A 1997 high school shooting in Pearl, Miss., was halted by the school's vice principal after he retrieved the Colt .45 he kept in his truck.
    • A 1998 middle school shooting ended when a man living next door heard gunfire and apprehended the shooter with his shotgun.
    • A 2002 terrorist attack at an Israeli school was quickly stopped by an armed teacher and a school guard.
    • A 2002 law school shooting in Grundy, Va., came to an abrupt conclusion when students carrying firearms confronted the shooter.
    • A 2007 mall shooting in Ogden, Utah, ended when an armed off-duty police officer intervened.
    • In 2008 Mercaz HaRav school massacre was stopped by two students that were armed, and former Israeli Defense Force soldiers.
    • A 2009 workplace shooting in Houston, Texas, was halted by two coworkers who carried concealed handguns.
    • A 2012 church shooting in Aurora, Colo., was stopped by a member of the congregation carrying a gun.
    • At the recent mall shooting in Portland, Ore., the gunman took his own life minutes after being confronted by a shopper carrying a concealed weapon.

Instead of disarming law abiding citizens of Indiana, propose legislation that would eliminate so-called "gun-free" zones. No "gun-free" zone has every stopped a criminal intent on committing a heinous act, but unfortunately they have clearly identified those targets where a criminal is assured that no one will be there to stop them.

Propose legislation that will address the mental health issues of those that commit these acts of violence.

Do not propose to sacrifice our rights on the alter of political expediency. Be worthy of the Constitution we have entrusted with you.

    Respectfully,

    Xxxxxxxxx

True, because he was essentially one of them...why unseat someone with whom you agree? I'm not crazy about Donnelly, but he's a younger Lugar.

Mourdock might be the senator-elect if he had someone to tell him what NOT to say when asked a "gotcha" question. Sheesh, I could have done better than that and I haven't been coached!

Yeah exactly. I never understood people who said to themselves, "Hey. wait a minute, I was really for that Mourdock guy and his small government conservative views, but then he said something stupid that was taken out of context, so now I'm all for the big government liberal guy."

People vote based on truly stupid reasons and now we're going to pay for that stupidity.

No, you had it right. You might be surprised to hear that most Hoosiers aren't religious extremists and found both his statement and follow-up non-apology repugnant.

Six years from now we'll all have had our trips in the box car.

    --->This way to the showers.

You equate an AWB with being sent to a Nazi concentration camp. Classy. Are you the last person on the web to hear of Godwin's Law?

That wasn't a "gotcha" question. Asking a candidate's views on abortion is perfectly legitimate.

The "out of context" claim is nonsense. Mourdock's statement was clear, and there was no mitigating context.

I emailed and USPS'd my congresscreatures. No call though. Despite the doom and gloom around here I'm hoping Sandy Hook won't be our Dunblane. Luckily Biden's ridiculous commission's recommendations aren't due until the end of January, so with any luck emotions will not be quite so high and we won't see knee jerk implementation of a new AWB.

This kind of thinking is obtuse.

"I'm going to vote for a guy who would take away our 2A rights if he can find an excuse, then hope that nothing comes up that he can use as an excuse."

    Yeah. Good work there. :yesway:

Our 2A rights are under assault, but at least we don't have to endure the dark night of oppression under an extremist who thinks God might not approve of killing unborn children.

Hoping SH isn't D is obtuse? Did you quote the wrong part of my post?

I'm not a single-issue voter. I care deeply about gun rights and the 2nd Amendment, but that is not the only thing I care deeply about.

Although I disagree with Mr. Mourdock on the issue of abortion, that was not the issue. His position on rape was. However, even in the absence of his abhorrent comment teabagger status was enough to disqualify him from consideration.

I'm not a single issue voter either but I'm discerning enough to vote for someone who will uphold my rights instead of getting offended about an opinion that will have no effect on anyone's rights.

Yeah, you care deeply about 2A rights, but apparently you care about someone's rape/abortion opinions even more.

    Again, good work. :yesway:

It's emotionally driven, undiscerning voters like you that put our rights in jeopardy.
