True...in today's world it takes more than $1K to really get anything nice. I stuck with the M-1 Garand with this thread, mainly because of it's historic value!

With the above restrictions in mind: A decent 1911 in .45ACP or a Ruger Vaquero in .45Colt or a Ruger Bearcat .22. The Bearcat would be the most fun (for me)....and your current gun collection had no bearing on the choice. What would you buy and why?
