For $1,200, I would build an 16" flat-top AR with the mid-length gas system, quad rail and a good red-dot/reflex type optic. Might have to save up an extra hundred for the optic....

Not technically a gun. Also, cost is a little more than $1200 ($1500 for gov't).

I certainly wouldn't spend 15 hundred bucks for a single use weapon.

Of course, if I built the AR, I could (temporarily) skip the optic and buy extra mags, ammo and a really nice case. Probably do that, now that i think about it some more.

If I had any brains (I don't), I should get a decent AR in.223.What I'd like is have my Ruger Bisley rebuilt by Cylinder & Slide, or Gary Redder,fitted with real ivory stocks. Then a floral carved El Paso Three Persons rig.Then I'd be an OC'r. (lol)

If I were given $1200 and told that I MUST spend it on a firearm or two:

I'd either get 1 HK P7M8; not a huge fan of the P7s, but they're good looking and hold value VERY well.

or

Walther P99c AS 9mm + Ruger 10/22 & a few upgrades.
