    Bunch of losers

I can't believe, even with a prompt, nobody has said it. So, here you go..... "You have nothing to hide if you have nothing to fear". Or...."You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide". Maybe......"If you have something to hide, you're a dope for texting about it." New idea...... "Text incriminating info only while you're driving. They can't use it against you when you get killed". Personally, I only text from the parking lot of the Beech Grove railyard.

The options are boundless. What a bunch of losers! ;)

Man I hate when people say "It's OK I have nothing to hide". Misses the whole point. Do we really want need to be a country with EVERYONE being spied upon 24/7? I think this group of police are as creepy as the TSA. Some LEOs wonder why they don't get the love on this site sometimes - here's one reason.
Familiarity breeds contempt. Cops who do this kind of work get too close to it and in their minds only see the "good" that comes from it. Then one day it gets turned against their family and bingo a light goes on. Especially in civil court where innuendo and intent are one and the same. Most will never live to see that light, **** just keeps on rolling down hill.

I have seen letters on a post-it used in an attempt to do serious damage. Once I almost laughed my ass off when the other side in a business related issue produced a document and their definition of what it surely was being used to accomplish. Now, had I not known that I was in a position to sink them, it would not have been so funny to just let them ramble on.

Still, there is no substitute for your ability to be convincing and that has absolutely nothing to do with justice or right and wrong.........just winning.

Not long ago I heard a great quote: There are very few crimes today that do not have some sort of digital element.

We all have digital fingerprints being left all over the place, just waiting to be interpreted.

We are already digitized from obtaining drivers licenses. Everyones face is a digital marker. Health records are just about all electronic records now. The new world order is here. Privacy was gone long ago...

Seems an odd stance considering that we're posting on an internet forum (and a gun forum at that), which is recorded and can be traced back to each of us anytime they want.

I'm all for privacy, but the reality is, it's long gone, and isn't coming back.

So, the default position is, don't do anything wrong and you shouldn't have anything to worry about (99.9% of the time).

That isn't the optimal answer, but it's the only answer there is in the face of reality. Besides, even if we had 100% privacy, I would hope our default position would still be to do nothing wrong.

Actually we don't wonder why we don't "get the love" on this site sometimes, we wonder why one issue involving the police/government/authority/whatever has us lumped into the same pile. Like I give a **** about what you or anyone has to say in your texts/emails/internet posts.

I apologize if you see this as lumping you as an officer in with those who are lobbying for legislation in DC. It was not my intention. I have tried very hard not to post anything that could be interpreted as disparaging to police officers.

I would be in favor of this if they had to get a warrant and have reasonable suspicion to start saving texts, emails and stuff. What gets my goat is when they take a blanket "save it all so we can sift through it later" approach.

I don't think anyone's saying you specifically give a crap what anyone on here is doing with their SMS. I think the point is that it's another demand by law enforcement to be given oversight/ability to go through everyone's messages on the off chance they might need it in court one day. That's not an equitable trade in my opinion. The security and privacy of data I entrust to an agent with whom I contract to move such data should not be subject to arbitrary rules on how it is maintained because law enforcement thinks it might need it one day.

Also, this neglects the main premise I brought up. Who is going to pay for it? Who is going to pay to build and maintain an infrastructure of storage and data redundancy to insure that all 2.5 trillion texts sent in the US this year are stored for 2 years? Even though each text is usually not the 160 byte maximum allowable, providers will need to supply an infrastructure which is capable of dealing with that, and with the exponential growth of the SMS system as it comes down next year. Do you think building and maintaining a 50 exabyte RAID 0+1 (AT&T transmitted almost 24 petabytes of data across it's network every single day in 2011) data storage infrastructure will be an inexpensive breeze? This is an unreasonable request IMHO. The possibility for it's abuse, and the cost it represents both financially and socially are greater than any perceived benefit.

Laughing at the people saying they don't use electronic means to communicate for privacy concerns all the while posting on an open internet forum.

You may or may not have noticed the "this group" in my post. In short I wasn't talking about you but I could have been more clear. I am hardly one of the LEO haters on this forum. Most time I am fully behind the folks that have one of the toughest jobs in America. I have breakfast most mornings with one of the nicest LEOs around and I hear how tough and thankless his work is. My point is that whenever national LE groups recommend actions like holding mass communications for later review, use of drones to keep an eye on the populace and heavy militarization the average civilian begins to be fearful and suspicious of law enforcement in general. IMHO what would work better would be an environment of mutual respect where LE could expect cooperation in all circumstances. Maybe it doesn't matter to you what I say and I can accept that but I think a more diplomatic approach will achieve better results for everyone. Citizens can either cooperate or hide.

I go out of my way to talk about sex, drugs, rape and murder in text messages. Just in case they are listening, want to keep them on their toes.
