I know that a permit is no longer required in Indiana. I applied for one anyway. I saw yesterday that it has been approved. Does this mean that I have passed the NICS background check or just a state level check? The reason I ask is I had a felony OWI in 1999 and it was later converted to a misdemeanor through Alternative Misdemeanor Sentencing. The same time I applied for the LTCHG I also filed a VAF to get the PIN number just to make certain that the felony doesn’t show up. That is still processing. So does the ISP check NICS when they approve a permit?

    Per statute, yes.
“An investigation conducted under this section must include the consulting of available local, state, and federal criminal history data banks, including the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), to determine whether possession of a firearm by an applicant would be a violation of state or federal law.”

First off, IANAL, secondly, it’s been awhile, but I believe they don’t count that against you after 5 years. Like I said, I could be wrong, but I’m certain I read that in some statute someone posted.

The “permission” to carry is/was not a “permit”; rather, it was a LTCH “License to Carry Handgun” if I remember correctly way back when. ???
Well I went and bought a gun and went through the background check without issue. I’m not sure what you’re saying about the permit
