while thi smay be true to a point, we have stopped demanding that immigrants adhere or adopt the mainstream American culture of hot dogs, hamburgers and apple pie. instead, we bend over backwards to make sure we sacrifice our mores to accommodate everyone else.

    new world order baby!

Liberals have long been embarrassed by American culture, and always flock to some foreign taste. While that is okay as a hobby, when you allow your mainstream to fragment, you sow the seeds for a breakup like Yugoslavia.

Between ethnic, constitutional and economic issues, America seems in the grasp of many centrifugal forces. Where is the glue that can hold us together in future, when the liberals have been so actively dismantling the country.

I don't see much of a future in our future.

So from what I've seen in this thread so far is that some people are against people being FORCED to learn another language but are for people being FORCED to learn English, FORCING companies to only do business in English and FORCING people to accept and assimilate into American culture. I don't know about anyone else but I'm confused. :dunno:

also, American culture is multi-cultural to an extent, but, like cake batter, if you dilute it too much, it eventually turns to waste. that is what is happening in the USA today. this is what the Socialists and Communists have wanted since the 50's, to have us destroy ourselves from within.

    it is working.

Yeah, these supposed communists have been working to bring down America by encouraging Mexicans to move here and to not assimilate into white American culture.

What does multiculturalism have to do with economic ideology?

I frequently hear complaints about illegal immigration in this state because they compete for jobs and go on welfare. Let me get this straight, someone can't compete with a Mexican who can barley speak English and who probably had less educational opportunities? Illegal immigrants on welfare is a symptom of the welfare state, and not a problem itself. It doesn't matter that someone happened to be born on one side of an arbitrary line or another, welfare is nonsense either way.

The ultimate hypocrisy though is when the welfare is for the rich. Lucas Oil stadium is a direct tax payer subsidy to the scum known as Jim Irsay. No one speaks out against it though because they love to be part of the collective and put on their blue and white jerseys. Welfare for the rich, a distraction for the masses while everyone else who dares not worship at the alter of the NFA gets shafted.

Maybe if the legislature in this state spent less time worried about what gay dudes do with each others butts and instead started abolishing the welfare programs we'd be better off.

I don't see much of a future in our future.

America was assembled from the oft-shattered, tyrannized, and disenfranchised peoples of the world.

The attractant was nearly unlimited economic opportunity, the glue was liberty.

As the attractant is changed to nearly unlimited freebies and the glue of liberty is dissolved, is it any wonder that these disparate parts are crumbling?

Fix the liberty issue, the rest will fall into place. While the rest of the forces you mention aren't untrue, they are symptoms, in my mind.

Much like aspirin doesn't cure the cause of the headache but only keeps you from feeling the pain, attempting to address anything beyond the core issues of liberty, especially economic, will be a temporary salve at best.

Don't be...it is the hallmark of adherents to the platforms of both major parties (and at least some in all of the minor parties)...force is bad...unless it is used to ensure something you like. That's what lobbying is...it is the nature of our government...scream loud enough or hire a big enough jet to a sunny enough spot, and we'll put the gun of government in someone's back to get you what you want.

You have a problem with not getting a live person or a business wanting to make sure that its ESL customers can be given the same service as its English-speaking customers?

I don't like the former, but it boggles my mind why someone would be upset at the latter.

No, you misunderstood me. When I have to "Press 1 for English" they're assuming I'm not speaking English. Why would they assume I wouldn't be speaking the most popular language in the US? That's a silly assumption.

Um...what does being white have to do with being American? They are not synonymous...not by a long shot.

Whoever said above that American culture IS multi-culture... :+1: You're getting repped. Exactly right. Who cares about being white when you're an American?!?! :dunno: :patriot:

I'm a total mutt, and have some totally opposite nationalities coming together in my family tree that really didn't care much for each other throughout history. Lots of pale red haired beer drinkers, pasta lovers, and people who built houses out of sand in my family tree. Yet I'm considered a white american male. Go figure.

Well...It's in English, and it's the first option...so it seems that they are assuming you're speaking English.

If you aren't teaching your child a second language, you are doing them a disservice. At no point in the history of man has the ability to communicate been a negative.

Nothing wrong with learning another language. However, people immigrating to America and expecting us to speak their language is very presumptuous. I bear no ill will to any immigrant or any business wanting to cater to them so long as it doesn't interfere with my business. By the same token if I were to immigrate to France or Spain (not happening) I would make it my business to learn French or Spanish.

If they say "Press 1 for English", isn't the necessary assumption that you ARE able to speak English to understand it? They are offering choices, attempting to best serve the greatest number of customers.

When they offer "Oprima el numero dos para Español", they would then be assuming you might speak Spanish, especially if you didn't already "press 1 for English".

We don't have an official language.

We are a nation founded of immigrants who moved here from overseas, and if you want an official language, we better start speaking a dialect of Tsalagi.

We are United States, the Federal government should not care what the residents of each state speak. Adopting an official language is up to each individual state. If one state is primarily comprised of Mandarin speakers, and the state decides to adopt Mandarin as their official language, do we kick them out of the Union? You do realize that eventually whites are going to be in the minority, right? Better start assimilating now.

I have taken a year Spanish and Tagalog. I only know the fundamentals, I have never pursued either of them further.
It might seem silly to some of you in IN who think everyone is white, 10th generation American cowboy, but if you live out in the Bay Area, you will be in the minority.
In the city I lived in, which was in the East Bay, we had about 80,000 residents and only 19 square miles.
Average housing cost was almost $600,000
14.4% percent of residents were white and 22% were Hispanic
50% were Asian, should we have been required to learn Tagalog, Mandarin, and Arabic?

Oh yea, and before I forget.
Remember that many of those large business that say press 1 for English, etc, service customers all over the place. You might think it is silly to ask if you speak English in Indiana, but other places, like I mentioned above, speak another native language.

Yes, it will be. Equally qualified, why wouldn't I take the bi-lingual applicant in a global economy? We don't need to traverse the ocean by boat in order to communicate. We can communicate anywhere in the world in real time. It is no longer a question of nationality, it is a question of in a capitalist society, how much money do you want to make?

Oh yea, and Latina Power is not the same as White Power. They don't have the same associations, at all.
And if you want to get technical
White is a race AKA Caucasian
    Latina is not.
Latina is only females of Latin-American decent, regardless of race.
There are white Latinas as well.

And what have those immigrants, up until recently, always done? Learn to speak English or make sure there was someone that could communicate on their behalf. Why did that change?

Immigrants and US citizens are not the only persons who call emergency services in the US.I dont think many persons think about that.
What about millions of tourists who visit the country each year? :dunno:
They might need to call 911 and might not be fluent in English.

I many countries operators have to be fluent in at least 2 or 3 languages for that reason.
If you visit Spain and need to call an ambulance (and dont speak any Spanish) you will be glad that the operator was required to also be fluent in English. :dunno:

Another thought, I would wager the firefighters aren't learning to pick up a lady at a nightclub. They are being taught phrases such as help, fire, second floor, water, smoke, heart attack, baby, my grandfather...
