Not what we here from our government and its media puppets…

In places where law-abiding citizens are allowed to carry firearms, we estimate that armed civilians stopped 51 percent of active shootings over the past decade. Over the last five years, that figure was 53.1 percent.

Of course the Feds and every other anti 2A group including all mainstream media hide statistics regarding good guys with guns stopping bad guys with guns! It does not fit their ideology.
It’s all because of Democraps and their quest to install socialism into the United States.
    God save America, Please?

Researching UCR categories, I did find some stuff of interest. This is how police departments MUST report crimes:

    The Part I offenses are:
Criminal homicide―a.) Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter: the willful (nonnegligent) killing of one human being by another. Deaths caused by negligence, attempts to kill, assaults to kill, suicides, and accidental deaths are excluded. The program classifies justifiable homicides separately and limits the definition to: (1) the killing of a felon by a law enforcement officer in the line of duty; or (2) the killing of a felon, during the commission of a felony, by a private citizen. b.) Manslaughter by negligence: the killing of another person through gross negligence. Deaths of persons due to their own negligence, accidental deaths not resulting from gross negligence, and traffic fatalities are not included in the category manslaughter by negligence.

Rape―The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.

Robbery―The taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear.

Aggravated assault―An unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. This type of assault usually is accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. Simple assaults are excluded.

So justified homicide stats are reported, compiled, and published. However, they are only reported as numbers, no context. UCR data contains no details, no matter the crime, just a number. A self defense shooting that was non-fatal wouldn't be reported since there was no crime on the part of the shooter. The only crime reported would be the felony that led to the shooting...a robbery or similar.

It's not quite as cut/dry as the article suggests.

That the FBI data is far from a complete picture was actually pointed out in the article.

This decision was taken after gun control activist Mark Bryant, founder of the Gun Violence Archive, lobbied the CDC to remove “misinformation” regarding defensive gun use estimates because of they are cited by “gun rights folks” to stop gun control legislation. Soon after, the CDC took down these estimates and now lists no numbers.”

“The FBI has also shown itself to be susceptible to political pressure. The FBI definesan active shooter attack as occurring when an individual actively kills or attempts to kill people in a populated, public area. This measure includes everything from just one person shot at, even if the target isn’t hit, to a mass public shooting. It doesn’t include, however, shootings involving other crimes, such as robbery or fighting over drug turf.”

“To compile its list, the FBI hired researchers at Texas State University. Police departments don’t record these cases, so the researchers relied on Google searches to find news stories about these incidents. As such, the FBI’s evidence relies on a dataset that is actively hostile to the truth.”

During 2020 and the beginning of 2021, I worked as the senior advisor for research and statistics at the U.S. Department of Justice. My job included evaluating the FBI’s active shooting reports. During my time with the DOJ, I discovered that the FBI either missed or misidentified many cases of civilians using guns to stop attacks. For instance, the FBI continues to report that armed citizens stopped only 14 of the 350 active shooter cases that it identified in the ten years from 2014 to 2023.”

They then did their own research to ascertain what they claim are more accurate numbers.

“The Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), which I run, has found many more missed cases and is keeping an updated list. As such, the CPRC numbers tell a much different story: Out of 515 active shooter incidents from 2014 to 2023, armed citizens stopped 180, saving countless innocent lives. Our numbers even excluded 27 cases where a law-abiding citizen with a gun stopped an attacker before he could fire a shot.”

I look at it a little more like the fbi isn't asking the right questions. Because their masters don't want to know.
Maybe, but it would require a significant change to UCR (that we've been using since 1929) that would require reporting non-crimes (self defense where no one died is not a reportable crime). A Congressional Mandate to add that category to the UCR would be needed. They've done that before in the past. In the scenario, it's the Congress that have control of this.

Right. But it's not so much that the FBI is trying to HIDE data as it is the data is not being given to them in the first place.
Your comments about UCR are correct but you likely didn't actually read the article. The UCR is not the subject of the article it is a separately maintained database for the FBI that is not being correctly maintained so as to purposefully negate the actual incidence of 'good guy with a gun' encounters.

I read it. What I am saying is the ONLY data they get from us is UCR data. So any OTHER data they are TRYING to collect will be incomplete or non-existent since they would have no way of knowing if self defense shootings occurred except for the occasional one that they see in the news. Local officers respond and investigate such incidents and don't notify/involve any Federal agency.

Correct. The article also acknowledged your point and then said the following.

So google searches is where the FBI got their data from.

Yeah, that's why I take issue with the article saying they are "hiding" data. It infers they HAVE data to hide. Truth is, I cannot even quantify it for my own city so how would I expect the Feds to know it?

In 2023, Indy had 171 criminal homicides and 45 non-criminal homicides (that includes self defense, suicide, and accidental). That is an example of what data we send off. We don't even break it down more than that. I'm dubious of anyone (for or against gun control) citing self defense stats as they are likely just guesses and virtually worthless.

I take issue with the FBI using google searches to create data they do not have, cherry picking that data and feeding it to the news media to use as propaganda.

And one other thing of note, the article never used the word “hide” or ‘hiding”. As modern journalism works, the writer writes the article and some headline jockey writes the headline to get clicks. John Lott is a serious man and good writer.
