What's the point of egress windows? For them to be effective you have to remove the chains restraining your children to the radiator - for me that's a no-go.

You make an excellent and oft-overlooked point, but you forgot that from time to time, I will be down there and as I am heating the fireplace poker I use to emphasize the depth of my anger and disappointment, I may light the basement on fire, then I may not be able to get out.
