    Being an adult transplant to Indiana, the age requirement for the state LTCH has never concerned me.

    I "thought" it was 21, but a friend's son recently applied for his LTCH and got it. He's only 18. Hmm.

    So the Indiana min age requirement for the LTCH is . . ?

    18.

    To clarify a little, Federal law prohibits an FFL from selling a gun to anyone under 21. In Indiana, you can obtain your license, purchase a handgun in a private transaction (there are other legal ways to obtain a handgun at 18), and carry, all at 18.

    IC 35-47-2-3
    Application for license to carry handgun; procedure

    The superintendent may not deny a license under this section because the information required under this subsection is unavailable at the time the superintendent would otherwise issue a license. The state police department may accept private donations or grants to defray the cost of printing and mailing the information required under this subsection.

    (g) A license to carry a handgun shall not be issued to any person who:
    (1) has been convicted of a felony;
    (2) has had a license to carry a handgun suspended, unless the person's license has been reinstated;
    (3) is under eighteen (18) years of age;

    You can legally carry an handgun at 18. You can't legally buy one until you are 21. But you can legally possess one at 18. It is just stupid.

    You can't buy one from an FFL. That's an important distinction.

    The discontinuity comes from restriction on who can or cannot buy from an FFL is set at the Federal level while who can or cannot have a LTCH is set at the State level. Indiana and the Feds obviously have different ideas on who should be able to own/possess/carry a gun.
