Good news on the Home Front:
As I'm sure that many of you recall, I'm fond of posting in the "Can we carry at church" threads. Most of what I post in response is usually along the lines of "yes, you CAN carry at a church in Indiana as long as the church doesn't have a licensed day care or run any kind of preschool/kindergarten/school out of it."
Well, my church (Mt. Pleasant Christian Church Mount Pleasant Christian Church) has recently asked for "volunteers" from the congregation to organize, plan, and then be a part of a safety & security "team". There were already several active and retired LEO (including at least one Fed) involved in this in the past.
In the first of our organizational meeting, I brought up the fact that in the eyes of the Indiana Code, schools were off limits and, as such, MPCC was off limits due to its school...due to my not being LEO. (Needless to say, some eyeballs around the table got quite big at this statement) I also went on to say that there's a provision for exemption on this in the IC that, with authorization, would allow non-LEO to carry on the church/school property.
IC 35-47-9-1
Exemptions from chapter
Sec. 1. This chapter does not apply to the following:
(1) A:
(A) federal;
(B) state; or
(C) local;
law enforcement officer.
(2) A person who has been employed or authorized by:
(A) a school; or
(B) another person who owns or operates property being used by a school for a school function;
to act as a security guard, perform or participate in a school function, or participate in any other activity authorized by a school.
(3) A person who:
(A) may legally possess a firearm; and
(B) possesses the firearm in a motor vehicle that is being operated by the person to transport another person to or from a school or a school function.
As added by P.L.140-1994, SEC.11.
Emphasis added by me...
They asked me to provide them the relevant Code and they definitely seemed agreeable to granting this authorization to us non-LEO who were volunteering be a part of the Safety & Security team.
And for those wondering... No, I don't have any dilusions of grandeur. Nor am I a "wannabe" LEO. I just consider myself to be a "protector" of sorts; and if I can assist our church in its efforts to keep things safe, then I would like to do so.
