Bought a Carson Design M16 and with light use is falling apart. Screws fell out and the blade deformed against the spring steel lock. Anybody else have good/bad experience with CRKT knives.

I own 3 CRKYT M16 series knives, my first had screw issues, I sent it to them and they made it right for me, good customer service. Honestly, I used to like them, but they are some cheaply made (Taiwanese) blades with mediochre steel and locking mechanisms. They aren't made well and don't last long. I keep them around just for convenience, but they're not something I'd throw any more money at. Shop around Spyderco and Benchmade, even their cheaper knives are truly head and shoulders above CRKT's quality, at least when considering the M16 series.

Took the words right out of my mouth. My experience and feelings with CRKT are almost identical.

I've not had any issues with my CRKT it's not the m16. I have a M21-14 with the aluminum scales. I've carried it for two years now, held up really well.

I got what I paid for. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Save up and get an AL MAR Sere 2000, been carrying one for a few months now and if this one ever goes missing I'm just going to order another one. It is by far my favorite knife, and I've carried CRKTs m16 series, ZT 301, spyderco edura etc etc

Looks pretty much like the same knife with a different blade.

    Nice hat, btw ;)

I've got several M16s (with aluminum) and haven't had any issues. I carry them every day, but maybe I don't use them enough?:dunno:

i had an M16-12Z for years and it was a great knife. I couldnt say anything bad about it other than the steel was a little soft but Aus 4 is not the best anyway. I did have to tighten the tension screw a few times over the years but it was a good knife for the money. I would try and contact CRKT abotu your knife something doesnt sounds right.

I have sold hundreds of M16 & M21 models...well maybe not hundreds, but it's got to be approaching it.....anyway, I have not seen or heard of this problem before with the M16/M21 models. I stay in touch with most of my customers and see them regularly at the shows...I'm sure if this was a consistent problem I would have heard about it. In your case I have to wonder if you just got a lemon....just like anything you buy, there is always a possibility of getting a lemon. I really hate to say this because I know most people on here have a high opinion of Benchmade knives...but when I was a Benchmade dealer, it was the number one knife I would have to send back for repair.

I'll have to run it back to the store where it was bought. Problem is it was about 8 months ago and no longer have paperwork/box. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

If the store won't take care of you, you can send it back to CRKT...it is under warranty.

THE CRKT LIMITED LIFETIME KNIFE WARRANTY.
This warranty covers any defects in materials or workmanship. If one of our knives ever breaks or fails because of material or manufacturing defect, we’ll replace the knife.
This warranty runs as long as you own your knife. Coverage ends if you sell or otherwise transfer the knife to someone else, or if your CRKT knife is modified in any way.
This warranty does not cover breakage or failure due to misuse of the knife. Knives as good as ours rarely break or fail because of a defect. Usually they break or fail from what we call “tool abuse”—using them for unsuitable tasks like prying or pounding. Therefore, blade tip breakage is not covered by our warranty. Use of a knife for any purpose other than cutting voids the warranty. (The exceptions to this caution are the A.B.C. Aqua and MAK-1 Multiple Access Knife which have tips designed specifically for prying.) So please match the tool to the task, and use your knife only for cutting. The knife will last longer, and you’ll be safer too. This warranty does not cover failure of mechanisms due to your failure to properly maintain them.
Also, consequential and incidental damages are not recoverable under this warranty. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of consequential damages, so this exclusion or limitation may not apply to you.
Misuse of your knife can cause serious injury or even death. It can also cause your knife to break or fail and the CRKT limited lifetime warranty will not apply. Failure to properly maintain your knife also may cause its mechanisms to not function properly, which could result in injury to you or damage to the knife. Follow the do’s and don’ts which are included in your CRKT knife package and the knife will last longer and you’ll be safer too.

HOW TO SEND YOUR CRKT PRODUCT TO US.
If you have a problem with a CRKT knife or accessory which is the result of a defect in materials or workmanship per the warranty statements above, here is how to return it to us.
    • Package your knife securely and insure it for your own protection.
    • Include a note with a brief description of the problem and how it occurred.
    • Include your name, street address, telephone number and email address if available.
    • Send your knife or accessory to:

CRKTs are ok. On par with Gerbers in my experience. For the price I'd go spyderco or kershaw. However, the M16 design is freaking awesome for a rapid deploy defensive blade. I'm not impressed with some of the elements of the knife but the overall design, the way it flies open in your hand and the integral blade guard are awesome. I haven't found another that is designed quite so well. If I could dream a blade, it would have the M16 design, about an inch longer, VG10 steel, plain edge (no serrations), flat ground and stippling on the handle and smooth screw heads that your daily handling of the blade doesn't loosen.

I have had an M16-13T (titanium handle) for almost ten years. It is by far my favorite folder for under $100. I find it more resilient than other more expensive folders including SOG and Kershaw. Although it is used for random tasks as an EDC, I think it is solid enough to trust as a defensive folder. I also have a commemorative one with a plastic handle, but I cannot comment on it because it has not seen any use.
