I don't think the legality of it matters since it is against air show policy.

Not that, that would stop the [STRIKE]criminals[/STRIKE] Al Qaeda, but not worth being "asked to leave", IMHO.

Are there ANY metal detectors there?

I don't think I'm gonna carry there. But I want to still carry my pocket knives.

No to airports, trains, and casinos. But there are exceptions to traveling on trains and planes, and communist Illinois Supreme Court allows legal gun owners to transport thru there state.

There were not, as of the 2009 show. They weren't doing bag or cooler searches, either.

There have never been any that I know of, imagine trying to push 100,000 through metal detectors with all the photo, video, chairs and other items being carried in. :runaway:

Indianapolis Regional Airport, what Mount Comfort Airport is now named is public property, not federally owned, I've carried on the property plenty of times, not illegal but I'm sure you will have a very bad day if you are caught carrying at the air-show.

Being a former Indy Airport Police Officer, I can tell you that as of the last Air Show I worked (2007,) there were no metal detectors (logistics, as mentioned above,) no searches, and no FAA regulation against carrying a firearm on the Mount Comfort airfield.

HOWEVER - the property IS regulated and maintained by the Indianapolis Airport Authority (which does not allow weapons on the property,) nor does the event promoter allow weapons. IF you carry, concealed is the name of the game.

My take (FWIW:)

1. No pistol inside the fenceline, leave it in the car. No issues there. Never been a car break-in to my knowledge (I should know, I was the bike officer monitoring the lots for 4 years.)
2. Don't fret about a pocketknife; everybody carries them and we made no effort to restrict them before. At the worst, they'd make you put it in the car (which I don't think has been done either.)
3. Take plenty of water and sunscreen!
4. Have fun, it's a good time.

"Controlled areas" is the key. Small GA airports don't have them. To the best of my knowledge, International is the only airport in Indianapolis that has a controlled area. Also note that it is only illegal to carry on a commercial flight, so if you go up in your buddy's plane and you aren't paying him for the flight, you're fine. (This gets into complicated aviation law in regards to what is a flight for compensation or hire; the way I read the regulations is if you give the pilot any money for the flight you can't carry.)

I don't carry when I fly because I fly out of Eagle Creek so if I had to make an emergency landing at IND I would be breaking the law.

This is a bit off the OP, but only a commercial operation conducted by a commercial rated pilot would be for compensation or hire. A private pilot may "share" the pro rated (50%) expenses with anyone they take for a ride. This is not compensation.

As far as landing, you are incorrect to assume you are breaking the law if you land at IND with your firearm. The runways and taxiways are not considered "sterile" areas. (U.S. Statute 49 CFR 1540.5 ) Only from security to the gate. If you park your Cessna at a gate at the terminal you may be in trouble. However parking at an FBO or on the runway if you are on fire does not break the law.

I am bringing CAP Cadets down to work the Airshow on Saturday. I will be looking for all you guys that are carrying.

I promise dire consequences for any that are detected. :):

I'm not worried. I'll just give you the secret handshake and flash my decoder ring.

You'll be fine as long as you're not carrying your Rambo knife, as we were recently reminded.
