You know, who's to say the guy in the above picture didn't do that on purpose? For added effect to his line "Get a Brain!"???

Yeah....thanks. That was my point. Better for you not to be there than to represent gun owners as idiots who can't even spell "school." From all of your pontificating on this board, one would think that you'd realize the importance of image in the fight to preserve gun rights.

Ah. So the only people who should show up at events like that are folk who never make a mistake.

I'm sure you've never made a spelling, or any other, mistake in your life.

Sorry, but I don't think the message on your sign hits home when it contains grade-school errors. I don't know you personally, but from your writings on this board, you are the last person I would have guessed that would show up at a protest with a sign that makes you look like a moron.

Next time take this guy with you for added effect:

It was good for gun owners that people came to this meeting but sometimes less said is best and signs should be checked for spelling errors. You don’t go to a major university and carry a sign with the word school spelled wrong. I can’t imagine the comments on that one from impartial observers and the oppositon. Remember Dan Quale and the potatoe fiasco. Coming up with defendable positions on gun ownership is something we have the NRA for and I believe they have a lot of good literature to back our position that is factual and well written. Just having the bodies showing up made a strong statement in defense of 2nd amendment rights.

    Crap happens! :)

Edit: fixed the bolloxing of the quotes that started with Michiana's post.
Edit2: took a couple of iterations.

Some people are really overthinking the spelling issue. Oops. I'll fix it for next time. That should be the end of the matter. I want to re-word the header on that side of the sign any way; it's a bit wordy for what I want to say. (Old joke among writers: "sorry the piece was so long, I didn't have time to make it shorter." It's harder to write short than to write long.)

Let me tell you a story. There was a time when a significant portion of my income came from writing for professional publication. (Note: that's not a reflection on how much I made from writing, but on how poor I was at the time.) In professional magazines (where I sold my stuff) there are several levels of checking for things like spelling and grammar. First there's the author himself. Most authors who publish professionally (there are exceptions, so stipulated) are pretty good at their use of the English language (at least those writing for English language publications: I presume that those writing for German publications are pretty good at their use of the German language and so forth). Next there's the Editor. This is a person whose job consists of two things: effective use of the English language and being able to match stories to the readership (buy stories that the readers will like so they keep buying the magazine). Then there's a copyeditor. This is even more focused. A copyeditor's job is to go through the manuscript and correct errors of grammar and spelling. By the time those are done, a set of "galley proofs" is printed up and sent back to the author who does yet another proofread.

Whenever I got galley proofs I generally found, on average, about 1 to 2 errors per page that were not in the original manuscript. I'd correct them and send the proofs back. Oh, and I also kept a copy of the galley's for my own record.

Then, when the piece was published, I would find that my corrections were usually applied, but I'd often find in the published version errors that weren't in the galleys--introduced in final typesetting. Which is really bizzare in the more recent stuff in that it's done electronically. They don't have to re-enter the text in a Lin-o-type or the like, but instead simply edit the electronic file which goes to a "typesetting machine." Somehow, in making changes on page, 3, say, of the file they'd get an error on page 5 which didn't have any errors in the first place.

If professional copy editors and proofreaders can make errors like that on a fairly regular basis I'm not going to metaphorically beat myself (or anyone else) up over accidentally skipping a silent letter in a rather rushed job. I'll simply correct it for next time and move on.

Oh, don't sweat the spelling error. Again I made an error just mentioning it. :)

It (obviously) happens to the best of us.

morAn? Not that bad. Remember the Detroit Mayor in court. Rob morAn was the deputy DA. He's MY COUSIN! :) and he sent the mayor to jail. He's also no MORON. :)

dburkhead, Thank you for showing up and supporting gun owners!! If more of us got off our lazy butts and took a stand when the call was put forth, the attention wouldn't be on any one sign, but the surge of people supporting their rights. I'm proud to have you on board with us.

Remember kids, this was an IU campus! I wouldn't worry about the typos too much!

You know. We spend a lot of time fighting for our rights. What saddens me to know end is that yall wory bout typin airs moor than the fact that people were actually there to stand up for YOUR rights. I understand some could not come or did not know. That's ok. As I said before, God Family Country. If you didn't know, you didn't know.

But the fact that you worry so much about a single word being mispelt and what others will think about it is ridiculous. You worry they will focus on it when, in effect, that is what you all have done.

The focus should be on what their talking points were, the fact they wouldn't let the opposition speak, and what can we do differently next time? (If you say spell signs right I'll

Most of these last few posts of this thread have been very counter productive.

The biggest problem I see with folks on here is that they don't want to get involved or worry too much because they focus on the "What If's" and what COULD go wrong. Everytime I tried to get a State Capitol Rally for Gun Rights, everyone shot me down saying it couldn't be done because some crazy person would come with a gun and start shooting and make us look bad.

The Tea Parties happened NATION WIDE and almost every single major one had numbers in the THOUSANDS and I'm pretty sure every single one went off without a hitch. It was the jumping point for the whole resistance of Socialism in this Country. It was the awakening for millions of people in this Country.

You didn't see them going "What if someone comes with a gun and starts shooting..."

We have to stop our arguing and ridicule of one another and learn to unite for a common goal. Dems, Repubs, Libs, Conservs, Independents, what have you, all put aside their differences to fight for Liberty and Freedom.

    Why can't we do that?

Ugh! I recently got into a debate with someone on Topix that claimed that because rallys against Obamacare were organized, it PROVED they were "staged". Huh?? Oh, and the ACORN folks bussed in were just coincidences?

Being organized by volunteers, for volunteers doesn't mean the movement is disingenuous. And each event has its own local organizers, who do not answer to any centralized group.

I wouldn't worry about what the libs say about us.
