With the price of surplus rising / dried up , I would stay away from both. They just want to much for them now and days.
I am still seeing plenty of 54R for about 25 cents/round, less than that if on sale. 7.62x39 still about that price or less too. I don't see either of them drying up any time soon unless our POTUS does something (else) stupid. Both rounds are still in use by combloc militaries today.

SKS is a rifle for close range blasting. I don't like the springy feeling trigger. Plus I think semi-autos promote sloppiness in shooting technique and are inherently less accurate than bolt guns. But in a close-up firefight I would definitely take the SKS with it's rapid fire capability and increased magazine capacity.

Most Mosins are longer range rifles and with the FMJ ammo are powerful enough to kill someone hiding behind steel plate. For a different type of combat. To me it seems absurd to "plink" with such a powerful rifle. You can also shoot through trees very easily!

If plinking is hitting a milk jug full of water at 50 yards...... Sunday I watched a guy at my range empty a full clip from his fancy AR shooting standing, and he didn't hit the jug even once! Seemed like a waste of ammo to me. Such is most of the plinking that I see.

I have never paid more then 8 cents for 54r and 10 cents for x39. When the commi surplus starts costing as much as nato rounds its time to jump ship.
Heck the cost of sks I could build a cheap ar. Mosin are still kinda of cheap , but if you spend a little bit more you can get a wall mart special ruger .308 or a 7 mm and actually have a rifle that can a actually hit ****.

I cant even buy saigas for 250 any more.

Well, you've obviously been at it longer than I have if you were paying those prices. I got my first Mosin probably 3 years ago, and even then the rifles could be had for 80-90 bucks all day long. 54R was about 18 or 19 cents/rd. in the spam cans. Seems like 7.62x39 has always hovered in the 19 to 24 cents per rd. range for non-corrosive steel case stuff.

And I paid 59¢ for a gallon of gas when I started driving. Welcome to the new millennium.

I know it's not x39 but hasn't 7.62x54r been a min of about $0.17/round in 440 spam cans back in 2010 (up to $0.23/round recently - Aim has it for $100 + shipping)? Not a big difference I think.

I have reloaded and shot a few thousand 7.62x54r rounds at about $0.45 - $0.50/each since 2010. I bought 3 spam cans of surplus since that time and have nearly two full cans left. My motto for both Mosins and Mosin ammo = quality not quantity.

The cost and effort involved in handloading certainly teaches you to place those shots more carefully.

7.62x54r as of 5 minutes ago on Aim's website:
    $199.90/880 plus shipping $25.00 = $224.90 / 880 = 25 (and a half)¢ per round.

    7.62x39 as of 5 minutes ago on Aim's website(cheapest they have :
    $247.86/1080 plus shipping $25.23 = $273.09 / 1080 = A little over 25¢ per round.

Not much difference between the 2 but a HELLUVA LOT of difference from the 11¢ per round being claimed.

With russia supporting separatists in ukraine and annexing the crimean peninsula, both the EU and the US have been tightening sanctions on russia. Even if there are other sources of 54R and x39 ammo, the supply will go down and so the price will go up.

Actually I was trying to agree with you!! $0.11/round is highly unlikely.

Price will really go up if everyone starts hoarding because of a projected shortage (real or imagined).

Can't believe ammo has gone up that much, but I guess thats supply and demand. You guys arn't gonna get cheap ammo from a website, you need to know people, or know really old people who hoard that **** from the 80's when it was dirt cheap and don't have Internet to know that the price has gone up alot. Either way few more years and the surplus will cost to much or be dried up . That being said you neck beards an't my friends, so find your own ammo.

Yeah, THAT'S the ticket. Screw the people you know and "old people" out of their ammo when they don't know its value.

Dude, I wouldn't WANT to be your "friend". But I'm sure the people you pay to be your friends do just fine for you.
