    Savage Mark II, .22LR

It would be hard to beat a Savage with an Accu-Trigger for out of the box accuracy and value.

    model 60

for the $ it's hard to beat the model 60. There are some aftermarket parts coming available to improve it if you so desire in the future. Although if you can find a pawnshop 10/22 with a metal trigger group and w/o the crinkle finish you're probably gonna be better off in the long run.
Good advice I received once. Buy the best you can afford and stretch yourself a little. You won't regret it. A used CZ trainer would be the best starter rifle for quality per $

An older Remington (Model 510 or 511) would be good. Everyone should own at least one 10/22 (echo, echo, echo). CZ makes a nice one, Model 452 American or varmint.

I see the OP got a Marlin 795. I did the same. Between sale and Marlin's rebate - total cost was around $100. I'm pleased with mine - especially considering the limited outlay. Hope to take mine to an appleseed sometime.

I've got access to a 10/22 and I have a Remington 582. One of the sales at Dunham's almost had me biting on the 795 and I saw a Marlin 60 today at Dunham's. Not really sure I need another .22lr though.

10/22. I've had mine since I was 8yo (over 20 years). Love it.

I'm considering adding a CZ bolt action .22 to the stable. They are the most accurate "affordable" .22 rifle I've shot.
