i would personaly choose a single shot rifle (mine is an H&R 44mag) here is my thinking on the subject:I'm sure this has been raised several times before and so my apologies for not delving into the archives. For me it would be a .22lr carbine.
1) highly versatile
2) lightweight
3) reliable
4) able to carry huge amounts of ammo
5) can still be used if need be for self-defense
What's yours?
The 870T was my first response. But the more I think of it, I may grab my Marlin Camp 45. I carry a 45, so I would already have that with me. My BOB has a Sig P220 in it with 6 mags and 200-300 rounds of .45 ammo. It also has a bunch of 10 and 15 round 1911 mags, which would work in my daily carry or the Camper. And 45 ammo would be one of the easier rounds to find.
Depends, how long are we talking? A few days a .22 or shotgun would work for me. If weeks, I think I would want something I could reload. Shotgun can be reloaded, but not by me. Any rimfire will eventually run low on ammo. As long as primers and powder hold out I can find lead. Just another take on it. Also, if we are the paranoid type, an AR would good... you can "find ammo" on the ground, or "borrow" it from the Government
