I'm sure a couple of people will be along at any time to argue over this.

    The 1-7 twist was either...

-Created to shoot longer heavier 77 gr bullets

-Created to shoot the long heavy tracer round

-Created just to cause argument over why it is used

    -Mil Spec...End of discussion

I all depends on what are you going to do with the gun. All my ar's are 1 in 9 twist chrome lined. I have had no problems shooting everything from 45 gain umc hp to 69 grain smk bullets. If you think at some point you may want to shoot heavier bullets than 69 grains then go with the 1 in 7. Some people have had luck shooting bullets heavier than 69 grains in a 1 in 9 twist. I have not tried it myself. For me the 1 in 9 fits what I do with the rifle.

Actually 1X8 twist will reliably stabilize up to the 80 grain bullet. 1X7 will obviously do it too.

If there is anything like a "standard" twist for the AR it is the 1X9. It will stabilize up to the 69 and usually the 75.
