    I know in LA in the 80s it was a thing with the Mexican gangs.
    The thought was if you ever got searched on the street, a bandana (or sock) and a padlock (bicycle lock) could be explained away pretty easy. And the padlock is cheaper than rolls of coins.

    Is this making a comeback here in Indiana? :dunno:

    I've seen it multiple times in my life.... more in rural areas, carried by the old timers in my family. The wrap the lock in a dirty bandana, and hang the end out of a pocket. If they have an issue with someone, grab the end, swing it and "wack!" stars and brides circling their head.
