Probably just my eyes but they look like two different tools. The top looks like it stretches. Do the jaws open or close when squeezing the grips? I’m probably mistaken.
I have seen valve springs worked on in both inline and V8 Ford flat head engines with tools like that and just now had a thought.
Having had serious engine damage on overhead engines where a valve or part of a valve was not where it was supposed to be when the piston came up was a problem. Also having all the intake valves hit the pistons in an interference engine when a failed cam chain tensioner pulled the cam out of time was bad too.
None of those problems are possible with a flat head. If the keepers let go, the valve stays where it is. If the cam goes out of time, the valves cannot touch the pistons. If you look past horrible flow characteristics and low compression pressure because of huge chambers, flathead valve system is the way to go. Henry Ford thought so.
