The car sat were it stopped for what seemed like an eternity. We didn’t move nor did the person in the car. The windows were dirty and we could not make out any features or anything else that would tell us who was in the car. I was pretty certain by now it wasn’t a LEO, because even in a situation like this he would have gotten out and tried to establish himself and his identity but then it was 3 to 1 odds and there was probably no back up for him. I looked at my friends to see what they wanted to do. But just then we heard the car door open. We all looked back at the car and a middle aged man peeked out from behind the windshield. His face was badly bruised and spotted with generous amounts of dried blood from several cuts all over his face he had at least a three day old stubble of a beard. “I’m not looking for any trouble.” He said weakly. “We’re not looking to give any.” Jim replied. The man got out of his car the rest of the way. And I recognized the uniform of a County Jail guard. It was ripped and torn in several places like he’d been in one hell of a fight. And he looked haggard and worn out “What happened to you?” asked Gary.

“I haven’t slept in nearly three days, I was working a double shift at the jail when the earthquake hit a lot of the jail collapsed, and some of the inmates escaped and started beating up all of us guards and forced us to release the rest of the inmates that weren’t buried in the wreckage. After that I spent the rest of my time trying to dig my buddies out of the rubble because there was so much damage downtown there was just no one else to help the few of us that there was.” The guard explained. “I would have thought that the jail would have been built better than that” Gary said. “Man that jail was getting old, it was built like in the sixties I think.” he continued. “And that’s not the worst of it, the SOB’s went over to the Jail II and did the same damn thing because it was damaged pretty badly.” “So you’re saying the city is getting over run by inmates.” I said. “Yeah it’s a real cluster frak right now, I mean some of the inmates were buried in the rubble but a lot of them still escaped. I couldn’t take it no more I bugged out when I found the keys to this car, mine is a pancake in a garage right now. There’s no one to give relief to anyone, and everyone is on their last nerve. I heard the Governor has called up the guard, but damn near the whole state is messed up so it’s taking forever. Communications are really bad since just about all the communication towers are down, its been radio to radio since this happened. You guys know anything? Do you know if we’re getting any help from anywhere?”

We proceeded to fill him in on what we knew, and he gave us more details on what he knew of the general condition of the rest of the city. Telling us that the west side seemed to be worse than the east side and that most of the major roads and 465 were generally intact. He went on to say that surface streets were hit and miss, saying that it took him nearly two hours to get from the downtown area to here. He told us there were giant holes in some of the roads in and around the downtown area. He continued to say that a mass exodus was happening in many of the west side neighborhoods due to the earth quake damage and because he’d heard that several Mexican drug gangs had joined forces and were attacking and taking control of large portions of the west side. And that some skirmishes had also happened between some gangs of Blacks and White Supremacists. All three factions had been battling for control of major sections of the west side, and that for the time being the police had pulled out due to lack of sheer numbers, and exhaustion. The only hope now was that the guard would arrive and help restore order.

We continued talking to him for nearly an hour keeping watch on the surroundings due to our concern that the battle we witnessed on TV at the police station was an indication that the violence on the west side was spreading to the east side. I began to notice that traffic was picking up ever so slightly and in one direction, out of the city towards 465. And I finally urged everyone to wrap up the conversation and get going back to our homes and begin defensive measures immediately. We all agreed and wished the man good luck and we started to leave, but on the way out I asked Jim to stop the truck since I saw one more thing I wanted to add to our pile of acquired assets, a bag of “Play Sand”. They wondered what I wanted with that but I told them let’s get going and I’ll tell them later as pointed to the traffic that was really beginning to pick up on 38th street

We hurried home and got out of the traffic. As we turned on to our street I noticed the time, we had been gone a little longer than I would have liked to have been. But it seemed that nothing had changed since we left a few hours ago. Jim backed the truck into my driveway as I had the largest paved driveway in the neighborhood. And as we got out and began to unload our supplies we all began to wonder where everybody was. It didn’t take long to find out why. My wife stuck her head out of the front door and yelled at us “Hey you guys, you got to get in here! “The news is about to go live and show the Convoy from Ohio, everybody’s here to watch, come on” she said motioning to us wildly. We quickly stopped what we were doing and joined the rest of the community in my living room. The TV was tuned to Fox 59 and Bob Donaldson was talking to a crew that had made it up in channel 13’s helicopter.

“Bob we are just about to the New Castle exit and we can see the convoy in the distance. We can see that even out here there is still some damage from the earthquake, but not nearly as bad as we have it in Indianapolis. The truck stop out here has a few semi-trucks stranded in their lot and there appears to be a tanker truck stalled out under the overpass. We can also see a few pickup trucks and jeeps in the parking lot but no sign of their owners. The convoy is coming closer now and we can see that it is a very long line of heavy military trucks being led by a Humvee. With several others scattered throughout the convoy.” Everyone in the room started to cheer that the Calvary was soon to arrive. Even I could not help but crack a smile while I knew it might be months or even years before everything was back to normal a significant amount of help was just a little over an hour away.

The Reporter continued as the camera operator continued to film. "Bob We’re just going to hover here for a little while and wait because we need to conserve fuel and the convoy is being escorted by two Blackhawk helicopters and we want to stay out of their way. One of them just flew past us and is going on ahead, probably to make sure the road is OK and the other one is circling around to the rear of the convoy. And Bob as you can see now the lead Humvee is now crossing the bridge with all the heavy trucks rolling in behind it…OH MY GOD” the reporter screamed”.

My attention was diverted from the TV screen for just a second or two and when I looked back on the screen there was a huge fireball thundering towards the sky, and the camera was shaking violently as the shock wave was hitting the helicopter. The pilot seemed to be having trouble recovering. You could still hear the reporter screaming My God, My God I think we’re going to crash. But the Pilot regained control within a few seconds, but the camera was only showing ground and sky as he struggled to bring the camera back on scene. All we could see once he gained control of the camera was empty road to the west and a faint image of a Blackhawk making a hard turn. We could hear the Pilot say I’m getting out of his way, and the reporter telling the videographer to get the camera turned around. We could hear several explosions in the background. Finally as the chopper swung around we could see a gaping hole in the overpass and what little was left of the tanker truck that had been parked underneath. Several other military vehicles had caught fire and their fuel tanks had exploded. The news chopper had put some distance between itself and the carnage. And we saw the top of a tarp covered semi-trailer come off and several individuals stand up with what look like RPG’s and they all went off at nearly the same time hitting several other trucks. Again the trucks that were hit became engulfed in flames!

“Bob, Bob, someone is attacking the convoy!” the reporter screamed again. Just as the camera showed the attackers start to flee the one of the Blackhawks came roaring out of the west. And the rotor wash shook the news chopper. But the camera man held the camera as steady as he could and, we could see that the Blackhawk had unleashed a barrage of fire from its M 134 mini guns and ripped into the semi-trailer just after the attackers leaped into some waiting pickup trucks. It missed most of them. The Blackhawk pulled up hard and over to the north as if to come around for another pass. But no it was to get out of the way! The second Blackhawk came screaming in and let loose a volley of hellfire missiles which nearly blanketed the truck stop in explosions and fireballs destroying nearly every vehicle in sight. The fireballs again seemed to shake the new chopper and again the cameraman held firm. He zoomed in slightly on some movement from the truck that had made it the farthest. Two flaming forms exited the truck and began to run as if they thought they could still get away but by that time the first Blackhawk had come back around and was in perfect firing position and opened up on them just about cutting them in two! And now as quickly as the attack had started It was over.
