Here's what I'm thinking of. Take a S&W 500 Magnum and change the barrel and cylinder to fire .223/5.56 out of it. The charge holes would be "chambered" to account for the bottleneck of the cartridges. There's a 0.01 inch difference in the cartridge OAL's, so it seems easy enough. The two cartridges run at around 55,000-60,000 PSI max, so no problems there.
Even with the shorter barrel, the .223 will still go close to twice as fast as the .500, with about ½ the energy (and much less recoil).
The point is just that .223 is cheap and fun to shoot, most of us already have a bunch in our stash. Why not have a long-range revolver to blast away with? I mean it could have the accuracy of a Contender/Encore, but be a big-ass shiny wheel gun! As for capacity, it could probably fit 7 or 8 rounds in a cylinder that size. (Maybe not, depending on the strength needed to handle the pressure. But .500's hold 5.)
Am I the only that thinks this is a great idea? It'd be great to shoot a BFG like that without each bang costing $2.50 or more.
