I've been looking into a good, long range capable rifle for a while. I've looked at my options, and think I've settled on the .260 rem. I haven't seen much discussion here about the caliber, and was wondering what experience INGO has with this caliber. Like I said, my mind is set on the caliber, but undecided on the platform, loads, etc. so any help in that area would be appreciated. I'll be hand loading for it, and I'd like a setup that isn't too unwieldy to carry around (11ish lbs.) Thanks in advance.

    139-142gr class bullet and 42-43.5gr H4350; add 1.0gr for a 130gr VLD, add another 1.0gr for a 120/123. I had a 26" 1:8 Criterion barrel in 260 that got roughly 2820fps with 43.0gr H4350 and a 140gr HPBT; the same load from a 20" 1:8 McGowen with the same .118 freebore was 2700fps.

Full disclosure: I recently sold my precision 260 and got a 6.5 Creedmoor because my schedule has changed to SEVERELY restrict my time for reloading and 140gr A-Max factory ammo is $25/box. 6.5 Creedmoor is basically the same thing as a 260 Rem, so consider the two chamberings equals.

Have no reservations about a .260 Rifle. Plenty capable. A good selection of Light and heavy, match and hunting bullets available. Easy on the barrel/throat. Easy on the brass. Easy on the shoulder. The only clean target a ever shot at 600 yards was with a .260. Lots of 195 + targets. Shot some pretty good 1000 yard scores with it.

Do I think a .260 is a good choice? Definiately!

Remington really screwed themselves from a marketing point of view. They brought out the caliber, (which was from a wildcat called "6.5 American") then only made it available in a couple of mid level hunting rifles, never offered much selection of ammo, and even that seemed to be on backorder often. They advertised the Remington 40XB target rifle was going to be available in .260 for almost a year and then never made them, even though there was people (like me) that had pre paid orders. If the Remington sales executives were not so incompetent, I would say the .260 would have a huge following today.

I'm looking hard at the savage LRP, with the fiberglass stock I'm over my weight goal, but I see many after market stocks available.

The LRP is a heavy beast, and its less due to the stock than a 26" BULL contour barrel that is 1" in diameter at the muzzle.

The 11 Predator Max should be able to meet your weight goal without sacrificing any accuracy potential.

Hmmmm... I now see the 11 long range hunter is also chambered in .260. It comes with adjustable comb, 26" barrel, and muzzle brake at 3 lbs. less too.

I love the 260 Rem. Here is my baby! I was looking to build an AR10 platform rifle and knowing it was mainly going to be a bench gun 260 fit the bill perfectly. I am limited in ranges near me - so far I have only stretched her to 500 yards but its a tack drive. I hoping to get to the 1000+ ranges up North this fall. Can't go wrong with 260!

I would have said a bolt-action before seeing this! WOW! I want one!

Years ago a bought a Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55. Did a lot of research. Similar to the .260. Very capable round!

I had GAP rebarrel a Rem 700 VSSF for me into a 260 rem from a 22-250. I haven't taken it past 200 yards yet but my best group was .35 inches. This was a five shot group and I am still testing the gun to see what it likes.

The one on the right is mine. Bell and Carlson M40 stock. The other one is my brothers which is also in 260 rem. GAP built the rifle for him.
