I'm curious what others consider both acceptable and exceptional performance by an off the rack .22 rifle.

I went to the range this afternoon with intentions of shooting centerfire, but ended up going the rimfire route. I was having a blast shooting that little .22. I decided to shoot 50 shots at 50 yds to see how consistent I could be. With remmy golden bulk pack ammo, I shot a ~2" group (after tossing out the flyers) at rifleman's cadence from a bench.

I then backed it up to 100 and after adjusting elevation, did 50 at 100 at a pace a little slower than rifleman's cadence. About half the time I'd take 2 breaths instead of 1 between shots. That group was ~4".

I'm shooting a Marlin 795 with a little Simmons 3-9x40 22 mag scope. I stuck a bipod on it today for the first time too. Now I'm curious what I could have done with good ammo and really concentrating.

What would be a reasonable expectation for acceptable and then exceptional performance by this set up at 100 yards?

With my ruger 10/22 I can consistently put rounds on an 12" steel plate at 200 yards. At 200 yards I don't really care about grouping, it's more of a rush to hear to gong.

My 795, when scoped, shot very well at 100 yards on calm days. It easily held 1MOA with standard velocity ammo. HV ammo opened up considerably. It now has tech sights and I'm not concerned with raw accuracy from the bench - it's strictly a position shooting rifle now.

You probably will have better results if you use standard velocity cartridges at 100 yards.

The Marlin 795 is surprisingly accurate out of the box for it's price point. At 25yrds it'll shoot 2MOA or better if I do my part. I know it'll also hold 4MOA at 100yrds, but that's just because I can hear the "ding" on a 4 inch square target. I don't know how much better than that it really is, I guess I'll have to post up some paper at 100yds and try it tomorrow.

I shoot open sights with my Savage MKII and at 100 yards using CCI mini mags which I believe are universally accepted as being one of the best performing .22lr cartridges I still have to compensate for a 2-3 inch bullet drop. At 150 yards the drop can be 5-6 inches. For myself shooting for MOA groups with a .22lr at a 100 yards would be extremely challenging, but again I only shoot with iron sights. Im sure a good scope could enhance my performance.

    ?

i only use sub sonics at 100 yds and beyond

I dont understand this thought proccess. I thought sub sonics.were a lighter load for less velocity? I thought shooting hi velocity was best for distance in my .22lr. If this is correct about standard velocity or sub sonic can someone explain this to me.

basically sub sonic ammo does drop more than hi velocity ammo, but since it doesn't go threw the transition it still drops more every time but more importantly it drops the same every time

Understood, consistancy is the key with sub sonic. I may have to compensate more for bullet drop, but it should remain consistant once Ive corrected sighting. Thanks for the answers

I took my 22lr to the range today to zero it in for squirrel hunting... and then spent the afternoon plinking at soup cans at 100 yards until I blew through 500 rounds.

Even after all these years, plinking around with a 22 can be a lot of fun!

    Now, for something completely different!

Let's talk about .22lr pistols at 100-yards. Yes.. It can be done with enough time and patience.

Now, back to your normally scheduled firearm debate...

Some of the most fun I have at the range is dinging the hundred yard steel with my GSG1911, seeing how many in a row I can get. Once you work out your sight picture, it's surprising how many times you can ring a plate in succession. Granted, the plate is probably 16", but it's still fun.

Now my wheels are turning. I'm going to have to do some research and see what I can come up with. I'm really intrigued by the idea of shooting MOA groups at 100 yards with an inexpensive plinker like the Marlin.
