Yep. In from the top. I scored the little grill from Kroger for $10. Expanded steel and hardware was about $20 at Lowes.

After the first cook, I did drill about 8 1" holes around the circumference of the basket base to get better air flow to up from the bottom of the charcoal.

8 1" holes where? Used a hole saw? I love your charcoal basket idea, may steal your idea

what size cast iron pipes did you guys weld on and how many?

I drilled (3) 1" holes spaced around it and threaded in 3/4 inch pipe nipple. They should thread right in, but welding would add some extra stability. I capped two of them and used a 3/4 inch fill flow valve for the third.

what size cast iron pipes did you guys weld on and how many?

I drilled 1" holes with a step bit and threaded 3/4" close iron pipe nipples into them. They should thread in perfectly, but if you get the holes a little big you can use 3/4" conduit washers to secure them in place. I have 3 around the base for intakes (2 capped and one with a ball valve) and 4 in the lid for exhaust.

Wow...I really overcomplicated this thing. I may weld my nipples on, I like them to be "attached". Drill hols and run bolts through for the racks? I'm sorry if I ask a bunch of questions, trying to lay my smoker out.

I used 2" bolts for mine. Standard 22" weber grates work fine with this setup. Three bolts per grate. Stainless bolts are ideal, no galvanized of course.
