I am not sure if there is more than one chip. I bought a 1gb chip and memtest shows 992mb of memory. Other than tearing the computer apart, is there a way to tell if there is another a lot under there? As follow-up, I was able to boot and run my computer normally and all memtest errors...

I bought a new ram chip today and memtest is still giving me a ton of errors. Any ideas what else could be broken?

I want a new OS, is Ubuntu for me??

Of course. I didn't mean you shouldn't do what a customer wants. I was responding more to the part about it being to weird for grandma. If I am doing mom's, or dad's or grandma's tech support, they will be running what I want to support, rather than me supporting what they want to run. I...

I want a new OS, is Ubuntu for me??

Instead of installing windows and the various anti-virus, -spyware, and -adware programs, then spending the time to periodically check the system to make sure it is running properly and not infected by more things than Paris Hilton, you could just tell grandma that things have changed and this...

      OCing a Long Gun

Without a law against it, I think you should do it if you want to. The police don't shoot on site when they get calls about men with guns and roll up on someone carrying a handgun. I don't know why it would be different if the rifle was just slung over your shoulder and hanging behind your...

I want a new OS, is Ubuntu for me??

Excellent point. I actually find ubuntu more 'user-friendly' than windows. It just takes some time to adjust to a slightly different way of doing things. If you aren't willing to change, ubuntu isn't for you, but if you will take the time to learn something new, you might like it.

As long as I get 200 pin SO-DIMM DDR, does it matter what speed? Do I have to stick with pc2700?

Thanks for the tip. I can't do that this time, though. The computer has officially stopped booting. It was easy enough to take the cover of the ram a lot on the bottom of my laptop. I will keep this in mind in the future, though

I want a new OS, is Ubuntu for me??

I was using Ubuntu exclusively for about a year and a half before I melted my RAM this week. I haven't booted into Windows in probably a year. I am probably the same experience level as you. I knew just enough to figure out how to do what I wanted, and I was never afraid of messing things up...

I only have 512mb RAM, so I think there is only one chip. I will have to find it and figure out what type it is, then how much a new one is. I will probably mess with replacing RAM before I buy a new computer, depending on RAM cost, anyway. I would rather get a new computer, but I have...

Memtest checks RAM for errors, right? Is laptop RAM not worth replacing? After my update last night, I ran it again hoping to get all the way through the test. It was 99% through before having another unexpected interruption. It only had 680k or so errors that time. Lesson learned: keep your...

What does it mean if memtest finds errors? I am 76% through the test now. Part of my problem was that part of the heat exchanger in the fan was blocked. I cleaned it and can stay running now. UPDATE: memtest had unexpected interruption and halted 100% through test 7, which is 78% complete...

No error messages, just shut off. I have it plugged into the wall and all appropriate lights are lit, so I am not sure it is power. Could be heat. I fell asleep with it in my lap Thursday night. I woke up with it resting on a blanket between my knees. Is there something to be fixed if it is...

      Ubuntu Help

Well, I think it may be FUBAR. I try running memtest from my 6.10 liveCD, but I can't get through a whole test. My computer shut off at about 35% through the test the first time and about 20% the second time. I tried booting the liveCD with no luck. Crc error, system halted. Any new ideas?
