I was camping at Big Bend National Park a few years ago. We met a young gal that was really stressed. She was camping with some friends and could not sleep in her tent because bugs were bothering her. So she slept in her car. In the morning there were big cat tracks covering her car’s hood...
Had a good morning yesterday. Called in four jakes and saw two eagles. Maybe the next time out I will get a shot at a mature bird. Even so it was great to get out. Glad I remembered to bring my Deep Woods Off. I hear this is a banner year for ticks.
As soon as I am sure that the deer is dead. I start the gutting process. I want to get that meat cooling as quick as possible. An old high school friend uses a very sharp Case penknife and is unbelievably smooth and efficient with the job.
I get pics of bobcats every year on game cams at our farm in Mitchell. This past year a friend had one come within fifty feet while deer hunting. It was the first one anyone has seen in the daytime in the twenty four years we have owned the farm. I am hoping that I will see one in the light of...
It is a rare year that I do not cross paths with a Copperhead on our property in Brown County. My parents taught me to appreciate snakes, so I give them some distance and let them live. We have several Blacksnakes around our home, so I have yet to see a Copperhead in our yard.
I put a safe in my brother’s house in a closet under his basement stairs. He then built a false wall to conceal it. I was very surprised at how well it turned out. The wall comes apart quickly after you remove the cans of paint on the shelves attached to it. He is not a shooter and rarely opens...
It is never an enjoyable experience waiting for a scope to get back from the shop. I am in the group that values quality over worry whatever the brand.
It is too easy to buy a used decent shotgun that is pretty much worry-free for 400 clams. Much better choice than to buy Chinese products that you might not trust.
I think Smith and Wesson and Ruger revolvers will continue to climb in value in the years to come. Simple, common, quality handguns that lots of people once owned will drive nostalgic urges.
As is it is not worth much. I would make it a learning experience and attempt to fix it myself. An investment of some time and a variety of steel wool might just smooth out the carving. Then you will get a chance to learn about browning or bluing. I have done a couple of jobs on low value...
I do a little deer hunting with a 14 inch ported 44 mag. It is deadly out to 140 yards I know from experience. I suspect it will reach out further, but I tend to be conservative when shooting at living creatures. It is a G1 that I have had for many years.
A family friend bought a real bear trap there several years ago. He had plans to hang it over his fireplace before someone broke his truck window and swiped it in Greenwood when he stopped for a late dinner.
I carry a 642 in a leather sleeve in my front pocket most of the time. It would appear to be a cellphone. It has never drawn any attention. I am less into working about what others think and more interested in gaining an edge that could come in handy.
I have a knife that I will never part with. A friend for the past forty plus year gave me a skinning knife his father made from scratch many years ago. He heat treated the blade and made the handle from a walnut tree that had died in his yard. It holds an edge like no other. He only made a dozen...
I picked up a Glock 20 in a trade several years ago and it rapidly became my most trusted carry piece. So 10mm is my choice even though I think 9mm is a close second. I just shoot better with the Glock 20.
We put our check into long term savings. Who knows? We might need it to get by sometime in the next several months depending on how long the recovery actually takes.
Looking forward to getting out this week. Every year my hunting partner kills a dandy. He lives for the hunt. I live for being out there. It is okay with me if I don’t fire a shot.
A friend of mine found just over a pound of yellows on a south facing hill in Brown County in my woods today. He promised to share some of his next batch. I hope to beat him out to my favorite spot so he will not need to share.
