Guys, it's simple... If you take pride in your guns, you should build your AR. If you're not that particular and might sell it someday, you should buy one off the shelf (for re-sale purposes). I see myself building a pair of PSA ARs in 2012.
I highly suggest reading 'Lights Out.' It opens the mind to very real, potential threats. Obviously, everyone will prepare a little bit differently, but it's good information.
The Ruger Mark III 22/45 is amazing, it is my second favorite gun to plink with next to the 10/22 carbine.

Buy a high-quality IWB (like a Crossbreed Supertuck) holster and be confident in knowing that you have you sidearm at YOUR side whenever the need, hopefully, never arises.
I would definitely suggest having her handle some handguns in a gun store to see what feels comfortable. Then you can see if anyone local has a few that she can test out.
