Due to popular demand, I'm resurrecting my "Pick Five" posts on survival mindset and thought exercise. I'm starting out with an old standby, the desert island.
You are stranded on a island in the south pacific. Washed ashore from your sailboat. You are uninjured, and clothed in shorts and a T...
Well, training season is in full swing and we have a busy schedule teaching people how to fight and survive in some of the most hostile environments in the world.
The class this weekend is full, so is Sunday. The next open slot for Pistolcraft 101 is June 9th.
This class is designed for both...
This past week, I kept up on the combat conditioning.
Hit the range twice. One day was fundamentals on G19 and AK. The other was all pistol work, turn and draw, shoot n move, shoot from challenge, one handed/support hand shooting, g, back up deployment and refam fire with Makarov. The rest of...
Yes, this was a dedicated purse, like a Hiding Hilda type, with an outside, side zip pouch that held a holster. It fit her gun very snug (Springfield XDS 9) with no need for the retention strap to keep it in position. With the extended mag (hubby's idea, 'cause more is better) it was impossible...
This was one of my students in the Mastiff Pistolcraft 101 class this past weekend. She carries in a Browning purse, designed for CCW. Yet she had never practiced drawing from her purse We discovered all kinds of problems once I started making her draw from the purse. The extended mag snagged on...
Mike probably teaches a lot of what Craig does since he attended ECQC a couple years ago after I kept bugging him to go! He's good at picking up material from other instructors. As instructors, we are always learning.
Glad to hear you're on the mend, but sorry about the long road ahead.
As far as left hand options, especially in the short term, like if you need to go L because your R hand got injured in the fight (for others since you've solved your problem).
Appendix carry even on your right side should...
I wouldn't carry all three of these set ups. Too much redundancy. If I was going to carry that much "stuff", I'd carry it all differently. I can live in the woods, in the winter with a 3" pocket knife, and a bic mini and have done so many, many times. Everything else nature provides for me...
I'm not a fan of the .22LR for serious defensive use, but its often the "gun you have on you when you don't have a gun." I hear that a lot, and I get it.
Well, along those lines, what do you consider the barebones, "hey, its better than having nothing on me at all" survival kit or items? The...
Good video! I like the simple solution. I've always had success using the rear sight of whatever gun I had in my hand if performed in a robust manner, even during entangled FoF evolutions. But, especially with smaller CCW pistols, or with modified rear sights it can be near impossible...
Good on both of you guys for adding a boat to your preps. There are so many rivers, lakes, wetlands and waterways in Indiana it just makes sense use a small boat for ingress and egress. Living on 3 rivers in Fort Wayne, a boat has always been part of my bug out plan to get out of the city.
Hey All!
Mastiff is teaching our fourth class so far this year and the next one is our flagship course, Pistolcraft 101.
This class is designed for both the experienced shooter as well as the brand new gun owner. You can ALWAYS learn something from experienced, certified professional...
The past 7 days: 5 work outs (3 days weights +running), 1 heavy bag session/abs/DL, 1 bike ride
2 dry fire sessions w/ AK, G18 and 870
1 Training night with the crew. After a bit of distance work got my Rem 700 back on steel. Then we did some individual pistol drills and finished with a few...
Good advice above, especially about having redundant comms (cell, SPOT, and radios). I'd throw in a couple whistles, and a strobe.
We used a SPOT in Denali last summer where there was zero signal, just to report in each day, that we hadn't been eaten by bears. It also tracked us back home for...
Hey all,
I will be teaching a 3 hour Wilderness Survival Class this weekend, the 27th at Lindenwood Nature preserve in Fort Wayne. This is an offical class offered through the FW Parks Department, so enrollment is easy. $110. Class starts at 0900 and runs until 1200. I always stick around...
When in a group, I use the MSR sweet water filter because I can produce a lot of clean water, fairly quickly. I also use the Steripen Pro quite a bit and everything is backed up by Katadyn micropur water treatment tablets, esp in Latin and South America.
Yikes, been awhile since I posted anything. Life's been busy, and so have I. Always training, always prepping.
The past week: Hiked the Grand Canyon south rim, in the snow and ice. Tracked some mule deer. Crampons would have made it easier/safer. Hiked the desert at lower elevation. Hot and...
Haha, Tom, I know! I kept trying to upload a normal sized picture and it kept telling me it was too big. I resized it 4 times and it finally accepted the tiny version. Grrr.
