That's the great thing about GMRS, your son and grandson can use your license. Some people use unit numbers I just use first names after the callsign. WABC123 unit 1 or WABC123 John.

Last night I was heading down to the Indy area to visit some friends. I was able to hold a conversation on the Indy600 GMRS Repeater and the Frankfort Gmrs repeater at 31 & 38 as I was coming into Nobileville. I run a UHF 40watt Motorola CDM1250 with a 1/4 wave NMO roof mount antenna.

You should have no problem getting into the Marion 600 repeater with a mobile. At 18 miles it maybe a stretch with a handheld. The Russianville repeater is about 30 miles from you but it has a pretty big coverage. My Motorola CDM1250 at 40...
