It was just too thin for me, so I decided to go with the Kahr. There was a break in period with the one I had, but after about 50 or so rounds, it was perfect.
Thank you for the rep. The 870 & 10/22 are both very popular. I think an H&R .357/20 guage combo would also be good. Thing is a kid needs a .22 for cheap practice.

Thanks for the rep! I don't know if you can swing the funds right now, but if you buy a conversion kit from Carolina Shooters Supply, JT Engineering will do the conversion and some other goodies for $200.
